During this last run there were times when lots of users from my team couldn't access any of the pirates sites. Others could. Boincstats showed pirates as down, but i am not sure if it really was.

Boincstats showed pirates as down, but i am not sure if it really was. Last week we had some problems for a few hours when my ISP decided to change my IP address. I had to make the change in DNS and then that had to propagate out. This morning DNS seemed to be dead for the domain, at least here and the US west coast. I don't know why. It seems to be working now. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Whether it has something to do with the DNS change... I have two hosts (Windows and Linux) in different countries, both are reporting 76.15.106.184 for [pirates.]spy-hill.net, but just one Boinc of them gets onnected.

GOT the idea, my other Boinc talks to user-160u6l6.cable.mindspring.com (76.15.26.166) - was this the previous IP? Yes, that looks like the previous IP address. My host is up 53 days long and Boinc runs there since restart. This means, that Boinc 5.10.28 was still prone to DNS caching? I hoped the issue was repaired ages ago...Does BOINC do the caching, or do you have something like nscd running (which is a good idea in principle, but I've had problems with it in practice). ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

If nscd(8) is "name service cache daemon" then no, it does not seem to be running. I blame Boinc, specifically libCurl. There were changes done to the ways Boinc uses libCurl and it was hoped many months ago not to cache DNS anymore. ____________ Peter .-)
