With a heavy heart it saddens me to have to tell the crew that Rusty, our first mate, died this evening.

He was 10 years old, which is getting up there for a golden retriever, but not old enough that this was expected. He had just visited the vet less than a week earlier, and passed with flying colors. Whatever took him, and we don't know yet what it was, happened fairly quickly. He was fine around 4:30, acting a little strange when I returned around 6:00, lay down with labored breathing, and died around 7:00.

This project has not been active for a while, but those who were here when it was will remember that I often used Rusty's account for testing, and made him a part of this crew the way he was a part of our crew here at home. One of the things I loved about him was that he was very curious and interested in whatever we would come across; that trait is also something I enjoyed seeing, or at least encouraging, in this pirate crew.

Please, wherever ye be, join me in raising yer glass of grog to toast one of the finest friends I've known. To Rusty!

Argh...been traveling of late and far from port. So sad to hear that news of our fallen mate. A belated "To Rusty" for tonight's bottle of grog.
