Something major seems to have happened...I am missing 150 turks done over the weekend, and this appears to be the case for several people on the turk list. Indeed, SEARCHER had posted about breaking the 11,000 mark over the weekend, but now has only 10,800 and the post is nowhere to be seen?

Wormholio put in a new hard drive in the server over the weekend. Last night, after he finished moving lots of files over, the database crashed. So we lost some 20 hours as he put a backup back from before that time. I lost 134 turks, myself.

Thanks to Stainless Cutlass for reporting the status of the problem. I was out all day away from the computer. We made the transition to the new disk drive last week, with no problems, but this weekend I was moving some things to larger partitions, and the DB partition got trashed, so we had to fall back to the last snapshot. A few forum posts were losts, and about 1000 turk credits. But since I have a separate log of the turk credits I belive I can bring them back. Just give me time to write a script to do that. Which likely means next weekend, not anytime this week. Whew.

In the mean time you can just add to the Turk without any problems. What Turk credits you lost will eventually be added again. There's no need to wait until that is fixed, unless you did your last turks over the weekend of course. ;-)

I just finished grading a bunch of spelling tests over the months and days. I've seen more strange spellings of February and Wednesday than I can count. And we won't even talk about the weekly journals I just finished. Now I get to write a welcome letter to the parents of new students. I'm not sure why I'm writing because the vast majority of the parents can't read English. So that's why I'm turking right now instead of doing my work. ____________ Kathryn :o) The BOINC FAQ Service The Unofficial BOINC Wiki The Trac System

Something is slowing the turk down enormously. At times I am either waiting for the solutions to go away, or waiting for the new solution to show up. I also have times where it first draws the recaptcha window, then goes waiting for the words to come in.

I also have times where it first draws the recaptcha window, then goes waiting for the words to come in. The server can be really slow today. My initial test run generated over 75,000 trickle messages which did not get properly processed. They are being drained out now, which is putting a load on the database server and thus the server as a whole. I may delete the stragglers, but I wanted to see how the system would clear before starting another run. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Currently it appears there are 150 people who have solved the Mechanical Turk. If you look at the "Top Turks", when you get to page 3 with entries 101 to 150, there is a "Next Page" link at the bottom. Actually, the underlying code is still not correct. Currently there are 151 users with Turk credit. If you change the link to be: http://pirates.spy-hill.net/top_turks.php?sort_by=turk_credit&offset=101 so that you get the last 50, you still get the "Next Page" link which still gives the error I mentioned.

The top turks list has been modified to only show those who've been active recently, but no credits or pieces of eight have been lost. Anyone who does even one turk task will have their full total scores shown on the list again, at least for a while. That's the question, what is the meaning of words 'recently' and 'while'. I've been polishing my Pieces while testing the Turk's behavior 10-12 days ago, but am not (more) in the top turks' table. Nor is there the SEARCHER, who recently got it to the new Number 2 of the TOP TURKS two weeks ago. So it is probably rather a week. Okay...done some follow-up on this and I am almost certain of the following: 1) I have had continued success for #1 above--numbers are always the unknown element. I have never had this fail. 2) The longer word scenario noted in #2 above isn't exactly true (or at least universal). The more specific pattern is that words with 2 or 3 letters are never the correct answer. I have tested this by both ignoring the 2-/3-letter words, and typing only the longer word always yields a correct solution. Likewise, typing only the 2-/3-letter word while ignoring the other entry always yields an incorrect solution. Also, I never encountered a matched pair (i.e., the 2-/3-letter words never appear in tandem). 3) Although quite rare to encounter, it appears that entries with punctuation may also be the unknown elements (not completely sure about these). ____________

I'm adding my few bits again: 1) Never noticed any number .-( 2) I could successfully ignore 2,3,4 (and even a couple of 5) character short words, while completely typing in a much longer second word. I've even tried to successfully ignore a couple of 2/3 char words while intentionally making 1 char error in the longer word (out of a couple of attempts, just one was Incorrect, but I could also mistype more than just 1 char). 3) I've encountered just one word with punctuation - "don't", it was accepted, but there was no other error in what I've typed in, so hard to draw any conclusions. 4) Maybe others could comment, I've solved just a couple of words, but I remember having encountered a lot of word combinations multiple times... 5) It is still true that I can make up to one character error in each word, to get it still accepted. --- Unfortunately, pressing [Enter] in the input field in IE8 still results in the solution being always silently ignored. ____________ Peter .-) ![]()
