Message boards : Number Crunching : downloading 5.13 repeatedly

Noticed today that one of my pc's downloaded a few Pirates wu's as well as the starboard 5.13 .exe. I thought to myself that's weird, that pc has been running that app for days. Today however it's downloading the same app every time it gets more work, 2-3 times since I've started paying attention to it.

The initial exe was there from long ago (pre-deprecation). I did find it strange that any host that downloaded 5.14 continues to run only 5.14 result 1146652 ____________ ![]() Click and enter your name for your BOINC Statistics

Contact wrote: I did find it strange that any host that downloaded 5.14 continues to run only 5.14 Yes, that's not what I'd expected. I thought an RPC would be sent to tell the client to use 5.13, but apparently not. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

We may have uncovered a bug in how the client deals with an app version which has been "repealed" (deprecated). Does anybody else who had starboard 5.14 see this? Or is it just happily using 5.14, as seems to be the case for Contact? ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

I just remembered a fix in a recent dev version that dealt with duplicate app listings in XML's. Would you consider upgrading one of your hosts to this potentially unstable (but I like 'er :) release? boinc_5.10.13_windows_intelx86.exe I run that version and don't see your problem. The upgrade solution is a wild guess on my part, but at least you could prove me wrong. For sure backup your entire BOINC directory and you would only need to run BOINC 5.10.13 for short time to see if starboard 5.13 exe is downloaded with every new wu. ____________ ![]() Click and enter your name for your BOINC Statistics

This is expected behaviour when an app is repealed. Only the latest version of an app is saved, older versions may be deleted to save space when not active.

Well, it's not the expected behaviour from my point of view. Once I deprecated 5.14 then 5.13 is the latest version. Clients who had 5.14 should ditch it and get 5.13 (only once) and use that. Clients who've never heard of 5.14 will just use 5.13. It's an extra bit of work to release a new version with a higher version number just because you decided you wanted to withdraw an app version. Hopefully it would be possible to get it to work as I've just described without the extra step? ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Right, but there can be a difference between how it works now and how it could work in the future. I think we've identified a potential change which could make it easier to revoke an app version in the future. (I don't know off the top of my head how to most easily implement that change.) ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats
