Hello,

Just returned this result and noticed that the final Wall Clock time logged in sterr does not look to be correct... it is less than the CPU time! The logging is a bit unusual too, like the result was restarted from the top, but then picked up from check point...

On the work unit... when I saw it running, I displayed the graphics for a few seconds and then suspended the result (with the graphics running). Left it like that for a bit while I played with some of the other results i had downloaded. I then shutdown the graphics and resumed the result.

At around 95% I showed graphics again and suspended the result for a few seconds. I resumed the result and it went back to 85% and worked forward to completion.

I'm running BOINC 5.10.7 on this host...

cheers!

Paul.

I've systematically tried to do smething similar (turn the graphics on, off, on, off...) (suspend the app, resum the app, suspend, resume, ...) (various combinations of the previous two) and did not observe the wall clock time being less than CPU time. BUT - my apps are set to be left in memory while suspended, did your Starboard WU possibly fell overboard while suspended?

Additionally, I've noticed that when the app's graphics window is periodically opened and closed, some memory leak is causing the mem consumption to grow up, by approx. 1 MB (Win XP). The patern is neither periodic, nor chaotic, but semi-periodic.

And - !!! - I've found out a workaround, how to dsplay the graphics windows for suspended (but left in memory) apps .-D

My apps are also set to stay in memory so i dont think that is the problem (unless it decided to ignore that setting for some reason?)`.

I have done this sort of suspend / resume before and have not noticed that behaviour. it usually works ok..

Having great fun with Pirates today!

Latest batch of WUs, the graphics windows closes itself once I suspend the WUs... most of the time. Sometimes they dont which is a bit odd. Even on the one WU I can can show graphics and suspend and graphic window closes. try it again and the window stays open

I think i have a few more of these odd timings ones coming up shortly...

AND I managed to get BOINC 5.10 to crash Explorer for me!! I have seen that explorer has crashed when I left this computer alone with 5.10.x but I have not seen it happen!

Crahsed explorer by opening a graphihcs window, suspending the result and then ctrl-tab 'ing to the graphics window before it closes itself. Then when it closed itself, explorer crashed!`... except i cant replicate that now!

Also found a file in BOINC installation folder called "job_log_pirates.spy-hill.net.txt".. dont know what that is...

yup.... more funky timings here and here.

And another!
This guy is showing "worker: all done." at 95% and then rolling back to 85% and counting wall time from there...

That's the reason for being onboard! :-)

No idea what's Boinc doing if it causes Explorer to hang up, mine did it too once. Then try the 5.10.13, I'm also satisfied with it and it is claimed not to crash explorer anymore.

My apps are also set to stay in memory so i dont think that is the problem

My idea was that after starting again after being taken off from memory, the app could start counting the wall clock time from the beginning. But this seems not to be the case. (we have to ask the debugger)

Well i've upped to 5.10.13. no crashes so far!

I have also found a pattern to whether the graphics window closes or not when you suspend the results... I will try to explain!

If I have 2 pirates results, the first is running and i display the graphics. If I suspend the result, the graphics close. Then the second result starts and I can display the graphics. This new graphics window will then remain open if I suspend / resume the result. Same is true for a 3rd and 4th consecutive results (that is the most number of results I have had at once)

Now the interesting bit..

If I let the first result complete and report, the second result, which would previously allow me to keep the graphics open while suspended, will now start behaving like the first... ie if I suspend the result, the graphics windows closes. The 3rd and 4th graphic windows still remain open when I suspend thier respective results.

I dont know why it would behave like this (lowest slot directory?)... can anyone else replicate?

Cheers,

Paul.
