The last time i reviewed the code (I admit that was some time ago) the basic structure was hard coded. That's why I think this should be done in cowork with Janus, as it's him who does the forum coding. And BOINC comes with a package including the features, such as UOTD and fora, so my oppinion is that any kind of change of fora should be confered with him. And he's actually quite open for suggestions... And Paul, I did't interfere in the discussion over at Rosetta, as I didn't read all the details, but I agreed with you in your points of views. Just to let you know... ____________ [color=navy][size=12][b]Those who can, do.

If it was more dynamically created the ability to easily "switch" from the "standard" lead in pages to the forum lists would be more configurable by the projects. So, a set-up like Einstein@Home becomes a configuration parameter change (or database change) rather than a coding change. For BOINC projects, setting up the forums is a one-time thing, so it's been considered okay that the project managers have to do it 'by hand'. That actually means editing and running a PHP script once. And unfortunately there are no good examples, though I can put out the script for Pirates if there is interest. Basically you create the Categories, then the Forums (rooms) under them. Once. Then the users create the Threads. After that, changes currently need to be done in SQL 'by hand'. You can change the titles and the order of display, and that's about it. It's not easy to create new Forums or Categories. You have to run the script again, which old parts commented out. I agree this is complicated, especially for someone who is new to BOINC in general. One thing I would like to do is create web forms for the ops pages to do those things, both for getting started and for making changes. It's been on my list, but I've not put it high on the list because I don't yet know anything about Janus's changes to the forums, and I don't want to set something up that is soon worthless. But I may do this anyway based on what we have now. But even more important would be a facility to easly create new (Forums) rooms within the Categories. For I2U2 I can easily imagine _hundreds_ of rooms, each devoted to a group of students pursuing a different investigation under the guidance of a teacher or guide. To support this we would need to make it easy for the teacher/guide to create and manage a room. The rooms would be private (only members allowed) and the teachers would have moderator privs. The way you find these rooms would have to be different (no single long list). In addition, there could be rooms for teachers only to talk to each other - no students. And if a group of participants (not students, but interested visitors) wants to do their own investigation then they can request a separate 'room' for that and it's easily created. The way all this is managed needs to be set up so that it would 'scale' to a large size without undue burden on the person (usually only one) who manages it. That's some of what I've been thinking about doing for I2U2. And some of it should feed back into BOINC, though other parts will be separate. So the other management issue I have is tracking changes to BOINC, as well as separate changes that won't go back into BOINC. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats | |
