The owner of the project is a new father. Life is busy. He is trying to do some updating of the backend and trying new things but it may take a little time as the youngun' comes first.

O.k., thanks for the translation ;-)

I was just wondering because we did not see any new work since May...

There was short work in September for Talk Like A Pirate Day. It lasted about a day.

No love, giving WU during a period that Primegrid is doing a Challenge. I am so torn, but I promised my team I'd work the Challenge, so alas I cannot partake in the work here :-(

you cant be really torn with these WUs, because pirates gives one WU once in 1 hour ONLY and each wu longs for less 10 mins (7 min here)

*sigh*

Graphics are crashing the manager (or something).

Used the `xhost +si:localuser:boinc` trick with my daemon install. Granted, I haven't checked to see if this worked with my F10 (64 bit) and 6.10.29 combo. Heck, I don't know the last time I checked to see if graphics worked.

So when I hit the show graphics button in the manager on a running Cube WU, the manager crashes with the following

[code]kathryn@Nova ~]$ boincmgr

The machine has a Nvidia card, CUDA capable, but not being used for crunching. I was running VLC watching a video when I first tested, but the behavior is the same after shutting down VLC.

Nothing looks amiss on either the science app or the graphics app with `ldd`. I can post the output if you want.

Didn't we used to be able to run the graphics app from a shell? I tried `./cube_graphics_6.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu` but nothing happened. I got dumped back to the command prompt.

FWIW, graphics from E@H (GW search) crash the manager in the same way.

The science app doesn't seem to be affected, though we'll see in a bit if the WU will validate OK.

Thanks for the info. I've also had problems with the Linux graphics. I first built the app on the same machine that serves as our piratical server, but the window would crash whenever I pushed a key, even the control key. The software on that machine is old (FC 4). On a laptop running Fedora Core 6 it didn't crash, so I used that one instead. But that one won't even start on the older machine.

Linux is, frankly, a bit of a mess.

From the traceback you posted I suspect a problem with input/output in the X11 interface (the windowing system used on Linux). Or it may be just getting the "display" initialized. I'm sorry to hear Einstein suffers the same problem, but maybe that means we have a bug we should hunt, or at least a common failure mode.

First thing to try would be something like a full `xhost +` to make sure it's not just a permissions problem. But I think newer distributions of X11 from Xorg use tighter security by default, tigher than just xhost, so that's just the first test. We might have to go through the X cookie system (similar but different to browser cookies) to get it to work. I just updated my Linux laptop to Fedora 10 and have not yet figured out all the little tricky bits like that. I also have a thinkpad with Ubuntu to use for testing.

The failure rate for Linux right now is higher than I'd like, but that's often the case when we start a new run and we have low statistics. Has anybody been able to get to the graphics to work on Linux? If so, what is your Linux distribution and version?

Thanks. We'll have to figure out from that what version of X11 is installed. The uname info is also probably a good indicator of how fresh this version is (2.6.30 is quite recent).

I wish there was a preview feature here.

We had it, then we lost it, and we should get it back when I bring the project back up to the current BOINC software, which I plan to do after this run is finished.

Let me simplify the matter:
emerge -vp xorg-server

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.5-r1 USE="hal ipv6 nptl sdl xorg -debug -dmx -kdrive -minimal -tslib"

I believe that's what you're looking for.

I have the exact same package on the machine I built this on,
so I don't think this is the problem. I'll post output from ldd and we can see if there is any notable difference.

Except that I built it on a 32 bit machine, and you have a 64 bit machine.
