Can the search boxes be put some place else, prominently? Like on the side (move the forum over a bit, not unlike Primegrid.) or at the top of all the forums? We could move them from the bottom of the main forum index to the top. I put them at the bottom because then you see more of the forums and where there is activity, without having to scroll, and you can follow the link at the top to the search boxes at the bottom. I did this thinking most returning users would look for activity, while searching is a secondary activity. The PrimeGrid site has a nice look to it (nice CSS) but I don't like having the main menu bar down along the side on every single page. You don't really need all that accessible for every page. I wonder if they do it just so they can say that the adverts are always visible? ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

I wonder if they do it just so they can say that the adverts are always visible? Exactly that, yes. Their budget is that of a budget shoestring. Thus even less than the shoestring most projects work with. ;) Yet having the "sidebar" always available does make navigating the site much easier. It ought to be an option for BOINC server (forum) software. Or for the participants to decide. ____________ Jord. The BOINC FAQ Service.

Those sidebars can also be useful for relaying important information on all pages easily. Notice of downtime, server issues, etc and help reduce the number of "what's wrong now" type posts (although it unfortunately doesn't eliminate them all).

Those sidebars can also be useful for relaying important information on all pages easily. Notice of downtime, server issues, etc and help reduce the number of "what's wrong now" type posts (although it unfortunately doesn't eliminate them all). But if that is on the "front" page, and important info is spread via RSS, then you don't need to take up the valuable real estate on the page for what is mostly redundant links that are not used very often. I do like having the quick links along the top and bottom of each page, and could add or change to that. What should go along the top/bottom menu? Should I change "Server Status" to just "Status"? Shoule "Home" be changed to "Main Page" or what? Is there any one link that should be there which is not? ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Is there any one link that should be there which is not? Yep naming is good, but more search boxes?!! ;) How about a link to BoincWiki? It could link to something like Lab FAQ later. ____________ ![]() Click and enter your name for your BOINC Statistics

Is there any one link that should be there which is not? But will users need direct access to BoincWiki that quickly? Right now I've just put the things that people should be able to get to directly for day-to-day operations. Search might be one of them. But I'm not sure the Wiki is. Home gets you to the 'main' page, with links to lots of other things. It's perhaps the most important. Your Account lets you quickly change your profile or preferences. The link is right above the indicator that you are logged in (or not). Help Desk and Message Boards get you quickly to those areas. Server status lets you check on everything. What else does a normal user need/want to be able to jump to quickly from any other place on the site? I can't think of anything, except perhaps the 'Search' function. What if 'Help Desk' was changed to just 'Help' and took you to an intermediate page that told you how to get help, including links to the Help Desk and Discussion rooms, and the Wiki for those who are interested, etc...? ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

What if 'Help Desk' was changed to just 'Help' and took you to an intermediate page that told you how to get help, including links to the Help Desk and Discussion rooms, and the Wiki for those who are interested, etc...? That's a good idea. It would allow for more methods of help to be available to those willing to look easily as well as eliminating the need to link to the page elsewhere as a secondary help/assistance page. ____________ ![]()

But will users need direct access to BoincWiki that quickly?I see the wiki as reference material or dictionary. Don't need it much, but a pain if it's hard to get to. Would the wiki link be more appropriate on the home page under Community or More Information? What if 'Help Desk' was changed to just 'Help' and took you to an intermediate page that told you how to get help, including links to the Help Desk and Discussion rooms, and the Wiki for those who are interested, etc...?That change might boost interest in help desk, but unless you come across other help info to populate this page, it may seem redundant and more a barrier to getting help.

Another barrier would be an invalid Help! link, likeWhat if 'Help Desk' was changed to just 'Help' and took you to an intermediate page that told you how to get help, including links to the Help Desk and Discussion rooms, and the Wiki for those who are interested, etc...?That change might boost interest in help desk, but unless you come across other help info to populate this page, it may seem redundant and more a barrier to getting help. Would the wiki link be more appropriate on the home page under Community or More Information? I agree, and I just realized that we had no links at all to the Wiki, which has been corrected. There's now a link with the other BOINC links on the front page, and there will be a link from the new Help page. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Don't forget to take out that line to "For Questions and Problems also see the Helpdesk" on the index page, Eric.

Don't forget to take out that line to "For Questions and Problems also see the Helpdesk" on the index page, Eric. I like the current layout of that page. The Helpdesk link sits nice with the link to the search boxes below.
