Hey Cornelius, I have to say I do really enjoy this first of April.

Up to noon I just thought this was a poor thing to rename the project and do nothing else but make the server unreplying.

But this is really a gigantic good and nice joke, which I like immensely.
What a lot of work!

Great praise from the fat orange Orang Utah without wings!

Sorry for that. The site was up&running since 5am CET, but apparently only for Cornelius and me.

We already wondered why no one came along... it was just that you didn't see it.

I've just noticed one confusing message on BoincStats:
2008-04-01: Pirates@Home - Server crash
The Primates@Home server crashed around 10:30PM EST on Jan 5th, and was brought up just before 9AM the next day. The cause of the crash is unknown.

The site got possibly hijacked by Primates? Or their observing zoologists.

When we break things, we break them thoroughly. ;-)

The avatars are still around as they are part of the filter that was put over the site. I don't think Eric took everything down, yet. He is also trying to preserve Primates.

As for the idea of Primates? A simple chat a couple of months ago:

[15-Feb-08 1:03:05] Jorden says: and um... lately I read Pirates@Home as Primates@Home... perhaps the name for the next BOINC project.
[15-Feb-08 17:29:25] Eric Myers says: "Welcome to the Monkey House, Mr. Rosewater"
[15-Feb-08 17:29:56] Eric Myers says: That would be a good April Fools trick - redesign the web site as Primates@Home :)
[15-Feb-08 17:30:01] Eric Myers says: Shhh!
[15-Feb-08 17:30:15] Eric Myers says: I'll need a monkey screen saver..

Yes, thanks to Jord for planting the idea for this little prank. We also have to give him credit for a lot of the work. He was responsible for finding all the monkey avatars, creating the slide show, changing the wiki main page, and he helped me test the site and the cutover mechanism before we made the switch.

Nice trick, eh? It was actually really easy. I just had page_head() turn on output buffering, and page_tail() then get the buffer, make the substitutions, and output that. Viola. The wiki was even easier, since MediaWiki already uses output buffering for its rather aggressive caching mechanism. I just had to insert the substitution step.

The forums provided one challenge: some of the pages are pretty long, and would fill the output buffer. I fixed this by processing the page one post at a time. The "who has the gold" thread proved to be a good test for this.

The primates@home day definately was fun plus a good test of the scripts as well. Thanks for the laugh as I needed it yesterday!

Too bad some of the primates here yesterday couldn't handle their primate avatar and switched back to their old avatar. No fun in that.

While the domain name is available, would it be feasible to still apply the filters on texts and avatars, when looking at the Primates@Home project?

I thought about doing this, but I see one problem: copyrights. The avatar images belong to whoever we "borrowed" them from. Some were traced to the San Diego Zoo, but many came from other sources. And the project logo, in the upper left of every page, is Timmy the Monkey from ThinkGeek.com. Now I doubt they even took notice of us, but if they did then they kindly held off on sending me a DMCA takedown notice. I doubt that they, or the San Diego Zoo, or anybody else we borrowed from, would be so kind if we left the site up.

Though maybe ThinkGeek would like the idea. They seem like a fun lot. And if they also were making money out of it....? I for one will probably by a Timmy t-shirt from them (and maybe add a Primates@Home iron-on to it?). If we somehow linked to them and encouraged people to buy t-shirts...?

But I doubt we could work something out with all the sources of the images. So like many things in life, this event is something that happened, and is to be remembered, but it's now past.

And if you find a little something else to buy, to push the total over $20, you can also get a free t-shirt (said to be the 2008 April Fools' shirt).
