Message 846 - Posted: 10 Jan 2005 | 19:46:03 UTC

I've added some new forums to Pirates@Home, just to see how these will work out.

First, a place for team discussion and recruitment. I'll be posting there shortly, as I've just created a new team...

Next, a set of forums for discussions in languages other than English. I know that when I first proposed this it was suggested that it was not needed. Everybody could at least 'read' English. I don't like that argument, and the recent contributions of translated versions of the screensaver also suggested to me that we need to be able to reach people all over the world in any language, not just those who know English, or those who know more about computers than most people. It's got to be easy for anybody to donate their computer time regardless of such factors.

Each forum can have a title and a subtitle. I'm open to suggestions for both. If this works for Pirates then I'll ask for help setting up similar sections for Einstein@Home.

Does this mean Pirates will still be about, even after Einstein gets up and running?

The message boards here look great (better than the other projects *hehe). For end users it really is little things like forums, signatures, teams, stats etc that make people come back over and over again.

Great work.

Ok, then if it's looking at the statistics of prefered language, could I take a look at those statistics?

If it's thinking before acting, which I guess means selecting the most used languages in the world, where's Chinese?

Thank you again,

G

Maybe similar to Screensaver description translations.
This from Captain Jack:
I don't think we need a translation to every language there is, but only those actively used in the BOINC community. If there is an active user base then we well get volunteers for a translation for that group. And I will add a section to the World Community forums. Someone just needs to ask for it.

Thank you again,

-1- thankyou to

-2- it should be an active group

KISS = keep it simple and stupid

so *my* piratic and shameless suggestion is:

the user returned the most work, should be honnored and allowed to wish/select the language used in future.

And this will be, without any doupt, the language so called swiss german.
(even the german nativ are not understanding it)

So that's a fair solving, isn't it?

Anything computerish is a pain to translate to Chinese unless you have English and Chinese Windows running side by side.

Perhaps from a new user's point of view (when moved to E@H) the forums may become a bit cluttered especially when more languages are added. My suggestion is to have a forum just titled HELP!! or something like that.

Good job.

Well, it seems that nobody undestood my point here... What I would like to point out is that once you select some languages, unless you give good reasons why selecting those languages and not others, there's going to be someone who doesn't like it. Me, for instance.

I think that it's a much better idea to keep the forums in English... Hey, but it's just my opinion.

Have a good weekend.

G

Yes. Point understood. Wrestle with this myself. But forums are still English.
Most posts are English. All important posts English. Every human tries to conform. But we must not be forced.
Allow interest/diversion of World Community. It is good for us. (Just my opinion).

Contact, you putted it out very well

For the non native spoken, most of them are able finaly to read and understand postings, but sitting in background without the courage to post.

Not all persons are having the luck, passing trough a school teaching foreign languages (english) or they are just not used with, *our* bad spelling is an obstacle always slowing down the will, to ask or give informations or more.

The social effect shouldn't be putted beside, in a corner, dedicated for "non-english", better written, "not-so-used-with-english" people, the obstacle of language is reduced or eliminated.
Outside of our countries and languages, we do have nearly the same questions and are seeking for informations and answers.

Not sure, but there is a number floading around, world wide, there are about 160 or more main languages, sub languages like dialects not included.

from this side (The World's Most Widely Spoken Languages) got those informations (1999):

1.Chinese* (937,132,000)
2.Spanish (332,000,000)
3.English (322,000,000)
4.Bengali (189,000,000)
5.Hindi/Urdu (182,000,000)
6.Arabic* (174,950,000)
7.Portuguese (170,000,000)
8.Russian (170,000,000)
9.Japanese (125,000,000)
10.German (98,000,000)
11.French* (79,572,000)

Groucho,

As someone already suggested, I picked the languages for which translations
of the screensaver description have been made (or are in progress), and I
listed them in alphabetical order.

I see that your selected language is Catalan. We could also create a forum
for those who speak Catalan. Or do they all speak English as well?
The idea is to make the project accessible to everybody around the world.
(Einstein@Home is, after all, a part of the World Year of Physics).
But of course at this point it's just an experiment (as is all of Pirates@Home).

The criteria for creating another language forum should be discussed, but I'm thinking now that a request should come from at least 3 users, to insure that it will actually get uses. (If there are only 2 users who want to use another language they can do so via e-mail.)

Most of the discussion in the forums will still be in English, but I'm hoping that having a place for those who are not as comfortable with English, or who don't speak English at all, will attract more users to our project (getting us more compute cycles to apply toward finding gravity waves!)

I like this, though I know the Helpdesk area is supposed to fulfill that role.
Still, there is no reason to not have both.

It looks like the "BOINC Beginners" forum doesn't get much traffic, so I've changed it to "Help!". Or should we have both?

As an experimental BOINC project, I am not certain that you will get many BOINC novices.

True enough, but it's the best we can do with this crew.

Besides, I was thinking that calling it "beginners" might keep out the people who know how to help the beginners, while calling it "Help!" will be for anyone needing help or willing to give it, beginners or not.
