This year the conditions for the beginning of Daylight Savings Time in the US have changed from what they have been in the past, and DST will begin this weekend rather than the first Sunday in April.

Older systems or machines where are not updated regularly may have a problem with this. Windows XP SP2 should be okay, but there are no automatic updates for Windows 2000. One of my Macs running 10.3 just got the update today (because I was not as good about doing updates as I should), which surprised me.

I'm sure many of you already know about this, and most of you won't be affected. But for those who would like to check I've put together some short web pages describing how to check that your Mac or Linux box has the right DST settings, and how to change the settings for Windows 2000.

* Windows 2000

* Mac OS X

* Linux

IMO it’s not: it’s just politically convenient. The premise that it saves energy has not been demonstrated; indeed, from what I’ve heard the available evidence tends to the contrary. A cynic would attribute the policy entirely to the influence of economic interests, retailers for example.

Here in Edmonton, Alberta, we’re already 34 minutes west of our standard time meridian (105° W for Mountain time or zone T), putting us in effect on half-DST even in the winter; in the summer our solar noon occurs between about 1:28 and 1:38 PM. Sunrise tomorrow will be at 8 AM, so for the next few weeks many here will be using electric lighting while they get ready for work or school, cancelling out any savings they might accrue from not having to do so in the early evening.

Allegedly it saves 1% of energy nationwide. Yet my electric bill jumps because the longer it takes to get dark the longer it takes my home to cool down and more I have to run my A/C. 91F here right now.
