The Pirates@Home server software, including the web pages, has been upgraded to BOINC version 5.7.5

As you can see, many of the "value added" features of the web pages have disappeared. I will work as I can to try to restore these into the main BOINC code, and when I get too frustrated with that we'll revert back to what was working. My hope is that until that happens at least some good stuff will get added to the BOINC code base. What do the crew think should be a priority?

Please report any problems you find, and hopefullly the seas won't be too rough.

The dubloons are there (check under "Your Account"), they are just not being shown in the forums under your avatar. I'd like to make it easier for each project to customize what is shown in that area, so you'll see them back once I get that coded.

As you can see, the "Author wrote" is there, it just has to be added by hand. The others I hope will follow eventually. They may not be as difficult to bring back as initially feared.

I miss the possibility of attaching a file.

Instead of a long quote from one's log, a txt file with it is better.

Oh yes, and the preview before posting.

Hi Capt'n. I just noticed this message today in the BOINC msg log:

12/26/2006 10:32:03 PM|Pirates@Home|Message from server: Starting in 4 days and 20 hours, project will require a minimum BOINC core client version of 5.4.0. You are currently using version 5.2.13; please upgrade before this time.

I guess I'd better upgrade finally. Is there a good choice of the newer versions that is stable and well used?

I thought I'd post a note on it to let other 'old' users that might not check the log know about the impending required update.

Wish you and yours Eric Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

The current recommended version of BOINC is 5.4.11 for Windows and Linux, 5.4.9 for Mac.
I like the development version (5.8.0) It has the standard caution: MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING but has been under test for some time and I can't see any reason not to try it out!

5.8.0 looks good to me, except for a bit of slowness establishing a connection between the client and manager. However I would bet it will not be released as a recomended client. There are still some display issues that I think they will want to fix before recomending it.

I've fixed two more small things. There were too many choices for sorting a thread, because the pull-down menu had both the old version and the new. Now there are too few choices, some will say :-) At the thread level I like to maintain the time order of the posts, like a real log, though one can sort by rating too. It's a nautical/scientist thing.

As some old hands already know, in the forum preferences on can check the item "jump to first new post in thread automatically". Now, once again, if there are no new posts, and if the thread is sorted in time order, then you jump the the most recent post, at the bottom of the thread. A small thing, but I'm glad it's back.

I'm glad you all like it. I just wanted to test out the idea. It has, I hope, a practical purpose.

I'm guessing most of the crew reading this ship's logs do so from their own computer, where they stay logged in all the time, or at least most of the time. But for our I2U2 project we will have students working from classrooms or computing labs or the school library. I can imagine student A finishing her work and then student B sits down at the same computer, but finds out only after a lot of time and effort that it's been logged under her name. The image in the upper corner would be a small reminder to A to log off when she is done, or to B to login as himself before he gets started.

On the I2U2 site the "avatar" is a real picture of the person, not a cartoon or other image. I'm guessing it's probably a good thing that we are not doing that here.

I don't see how it would matter since every mini-pic would be only visible to the individual user. And you know mine would be some pirate hottie anyway. ;)

Right now, but imagine that someone has two versions of the avatar/mini-pic.
The "internal" one is really a picture of you, so that other participants can see what you look like. After all, you are working with them.

The "external" one is a cartoon or picture or other more anonymous image.

The same could be done with user names.

The idea is that for a site which is used by students we want to protect the identity of the student from the "outside" world, but we want to be able to use the students' real identity in the "inside" world.

I'm just thinking this through, I've not implemented anything nor made definite plans to do it.
