Questions and Answers : Pirates@Home Problems : Re-verify email doesn't work

The other day, I saw the need to reverify my email. No problem. I clicked through, clicked the button, got the email and clicked the link in the email. I was informed that my email was indeed verified. Cool beans.

So what's the difference between (re)verifying and validating?

Oh, if nothing worse... I thought we'd be sent viruses then, or the server would explode.

Ageless wrote: So what's the difference between (re)verifying and validating? The source code for BOINC is ambigious on this. "Validating" in one place means checking that it has the valid form of an e-mail address (eg. has @ in it, and a domain after that). But in other places it's used as "verifying that it works". I've changed the user interface here to use "verify" that way, and I've added a timestamp to the database to track when the address was verified. My email address, when I changed it to the one I am currently using, was validated at the time. Why the need to re-verify? How long ago was that? If it's been a long time then we may not be sure that the address still works, or more importantly, that you still control it. Does it need to be done every so many times? What do you care what my email address is?Projects would be able to require verification, or re-verification, within a given period, and would choose the period. You might want to make sure that the address was verified within the past year. Or two? Or 6 months. It would be up to the projects. What will happen if I never re-verify my email address? You might not get work. The run we had started, and then interrupted, was a test of a scheduler modification which would only give work to hosts owned by someone who had verified his/her e-mail address. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Doing this one separately. Time-frame was December 2007. I changed all my projects to that new email address then. It's a throw-away address, needed for BOINC Wide Teams. But so far, no spam on it and no one has emailed to it. ;-) Needing to re-verify my email every so many months on projects is only going to be bothersome, especially with the many amounts of projects out there. If I don't want work from your project, I'll set it to No New Tasks. Many of the projects in my BOINC are set to NNT, only still there so my cross-project ID doesn't go wandering off again. ____________ Jord. The BOINC FAQ Service.

Ageless wrote: Needing to re-verify my email every so many months on projects is only going to be bothersome, especially with the many amounts of projects out there.Projects would decide how to use this, and would have to weight the benefits. Scheduling is not the only place this could be used. You might get work, but not be able to alter your profile or post to the forums unless you've verified your e-mail in the past year. I doubt most projects would care about this. I'm more interested in this for use with students. You'd have to re-verify your e-mail address each year to continue participating in the on-line component of the project. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

For that matter, why is yours orange? Are you in between verifications, or just a non-decider? ;-) Finally, is there a deadline attached to needing to click the link in the email? Or does it never time out? ____________ Jord. The BOINC FAQ Service.

Ageless wrote: Finally, is there a deadline attached to needing to click the link in the email? Or does it never time out? Good point. The way BOINC does it, it never times out. You could probably re-play one from last year to verify an e-mail account that you actually don't control anymore. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Suggestion is to have the status of your e-mail (color?) on Your Account match the status of the verification.

Wormholio wrote: You could probably re-play one from last year to verify an e-mail account that you actually don't control anymore. I have been reading this sentence a couple of times now and I hit upon the problem of, how do I use a link in an email sent to me at that time if I no longer can control said email address? If I can't get into that email address, I can't get at the email... or can I? ;-) ____________ Jord. The BOINC FAQ Service.

If I can't get into that email address, I can't get at the email... or can I? ;-) You would have to have a copy of the message, but saved somewhere else (if you can't get to the actual e-mail account). So this is not a likely scenario. So it's not clear to me why there should be a timeout for the verification. You get the message, but don't click the link for 6 months, during which time your addresss is not verified. You click the link, and it's verified. No problem. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

I had hoped my suggestion to at least change the color on the Account page to match the status of your verify would be done. The last verified and next verify dates would also be a nice addition.

Both the account page and pull-down in forums are color coded. Red means the e-mail address has not been verified. Green means it has been verified recently. Orange means it was once verified, but not recently (where "recent" is configurable by the project).

I finally got a chance to look at the code. It should now be the same color in your personal account page as it is in the forums pop-up. I think the problem was one missing line of code. Please verify that it works now (or doesn't).

On the home page I show 13 March 2008, on the forums I show Feb 7, 2009. Is this the issue? Why two different dates?

That is the issue. I don't know how you get two different dates, but 13 March 2008 is old enough to get the orange, while the other date is new enough for green. So that part is working, and now I know where to look for the problem. Pooh Bear 27 wrote: Perfect! Not quite, but something similar. There are two different user data objects in the BOINC forum code. When Pirates@Home started there was only one. The properties of that object correspond directly to the columns in the user table, or a join between the user table and forum preferences table. Then a new User object was introduced which adds an abstraction layer to access the database, which in principle would allow the use of another database system, such as PostgreSQL, in place of MySQL. Good idea. Instead of just object properties, the new User object has accessor methods to get the values of the properties. So I've even been trying to use the new User object when I make changes to the site. But as a result there is a mixture of new and old, not just on Pirates@Home but still in the current BOINC code. So when I see "$user" in the code, is it the new style object or the old? In this case the same code in two places produced different results, because it should have used the old user object in one place and the newer User object in the other. As an interesting aside, it looks like the incorrect usage might have resulted in your getting the email verification date of user #1 -- which is me. I last verified my e-mail address on Thu, 13 Mar 2008 21:43:02 EDT, so that's why you got March 13th. Strange thing is, my verification date in the forums was showing as 14 March. Turns out one place was using local time for the server, the other GMT time, hence the difference of a day. That's also been corrected. Thank you, Mad Tom, for reminding me so many times that this puzzle needed to be solved. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

I'm not getting the verification email. I've tried a couple times over the few days. It's going to a gmail address. It's not showing up in spam. I shouldn't have a problem with the domain. :)
