Back to testing. My RAC has fallen under 1.0, I can edit the glossary as evidenced by the spelling mistake I made on the first page of the Glossary.

Now what's the volunteer tester tag for? Auto-added when someone is a moderator? And how in Hook's name did I become a moderator? ;-)

Message 4783 - Posted: 26 Jan 2007 | 13:08:27 UTC

I've been ashore for a few days, to meet with the captains of other ships, and in my absence I made some promotions. As with just about everything here, this is just a test. The authentication plug-in I wrote for the wiki is supposed to promote BOINC moderators to chiefs, and put anybody who's banned from the forums in the brig.

I think the moderator interface here is slightly different from that on other projects, so perhaps we can get a screen shot?

To test whether the banning works I will ban Misfit again, once I find where I put the tool to do it, and we'll see if he ends up in the brig on the wiki. It's only a test. He's performing a valuable duty, as he has many times before. He hasn't done anything wrong (this time :-), and I'll let him out once I return from my travels and/or the test is completed.

Keep in mind that all promotions on a pirate ship are provisional. As the Dread Pirate Roberts so eloquently put it, "I'll likely kill you in the morning". Meanwhile, let's see if it works as it should.

Options on the BOINC forums:

Reply to this thread
Subscribe to this thread (changes in Unsubscribe)
Delete this thread (changes in Undelete this thread)
Sticky this thread (Changes into De-sticky this thread)
Lock thread (changes into Unlock thread)
Move this thread
Edit thread title

So in essence there's not much difference, but for that here it's buttons (which change as well), they are on a line and not links underneath each other.

Oh, I did edit the glossary back to normal. :-)

Sure, it must be a honour for Misfit to be blamed as the first one! ;-)

[edit]I've tried to move this post 4785 from thread 718 to thread 711. It got moved, but the other browser's page still did not load with modified original thread.[/edit]

[edit]The backward move went fine.[/edit]

[edit]Successfully deleted, and undeleted.[/edit]

Post tools seem to work fine.

I did fully forgot the prophecy, we talk about Misfit and he's in jail...

BTW, I like it how clearly is it shown that someone's in brig. Is it a Boinc standard? Or "not yet, but soon to be..."?

No, David Anderson didn't want it as an option. It would hack too much into a person's privacy if it were shown he was banned...

I think it might also cause some other problems. The banned user might try to find a way to 'get back' at the project. Other users might taunt or tease the banned person, as we do now to Misfit.

On the other hand, it's useful for moderators and administrators to see that a user is banned, so it might be that it only shows for them.

Thanks for flagging this. The way you configure the report feature seems to have changed since I last looked at it, and I had not set up the list of people to whom the reports are to be mailed. Now that I have the report feature is working.

I think right now we can blame misfit for sleeping on the job. I put him in the brig for one day, hoping he would then try out the glossary and report back how it worked (or didn't, since he was banned). But it seems he didn't try it.

Misfit, are you willing to help us test this?

All I am getting off late is emails of people moving my posts around. So now it's probably all the red-x reports as well? And when will someone make that icon really a red-x, so the name for it is proper? ;-)

Pfff, I appear not to be on the list. :)

As a not-logged-in visitor, I do not see the tag near Misfit's data.
[edit]Not even as chief. Could the brave Misfit already leave the brig? Is there currently any other volunteer (except Scott)? ;-)[/edit]

Someone being moderator on other Boinc fora, can confirm or deny, whether the mods can see such tags on banned users.

There is no such tag on other forums. As far as I know it's a custom build option by Eric for the Pirates@Home forums, not included as an option (yet?) in the BOINC forums.

I put myself in the brig, after I built a little control panel to do so. I wish we had file attachments working so I could show it off. But for now it's reserved for admins, not moderators (er, um, officers, not chiefs).

I've also added an item to a user's account information page: if you are in the brig it shows when your sentence expires. If you've ever been in the brig it shows when you last got out. This is only shown to that user, not everybody.
It's also shown on the control panel so that I know your current status. If your sentence is to run another day I can easily change it to just 2 more hours, or pop you out of the brig right away for good behaviour.

Ah...Feels nice to be out!

As for the Glossary, I could not edit existing entries nor could I create new ones (though the latter is likely due to my seaman ranking). I also could not post on the regular forum.

Now, what I could do is probably not what you want:

1) You will see that I was able to move and retitle entries while in the brig (see the brig moved entry). That is probably not an ability that one should have while in the brig (an angry inmate could think up some creative new entry names).

2) If you take a look at your own talk Cap'n, you will see that I was able to edit it at will. I was able to do so using either the 'edit' tab or the '+' tab. The 'move' feature also would work (I stopped before actually executing the move).

Edit: Just one other quick note...I was still listed in the glossary user list as in the brig until I logged out and back in.

I guess my absence exceeded yours. So I was banned? I never received an email notice. So how did I do? Was I put in irons and viciously flogged, or did I escape out through the secret trap door with all your gold?

So I was banned? I never received an email notice.

Neither did I previous times, probably any notification is usually not necessary, I assume the affected persons will mostly notice it immediately :-D

So how did I do? Was I put in irons and viciously flogged, or did I escape out through the secret trap door with all your gold?

You've probably not noticed it, 'cause during your absence you've been foltered "in behalf" (because of absence of your person). (The folter was off course chosen honouring your general Pirates' preferences.)

(BTW, in my case someone have invited sharks in addition to my preferred foltering, but luckily I do not remember at this time period very good.)

The one time that I was banned (that I know of) I found out because I received a notice.

If you're banned and you don't notice it, is it really punishment?

...it's useful for moderators and administrators to see that a user is banned, so it might be that it only shows for them.

At the Seti board, the main board, there once were a function where the banned person's posts were hidden, but that function disappeared for reasons unknown to me.

It's being announced on the the mod list when people get banned both on the main board and on the Beta board. So the moderators know. And usually most of the posters know also, as they have seen the behavior that get people banned.

Now what's the volunteer tester tag for? Auto-added when someone is a moderator? And how in Hook's name did I become a moderator? ;-)
