I've added a small feature to the forums which I'd like to test out. Every user now has up to 5 rating points which they can spend on rating the posts (or profiles) of other users, These will be slowly renewed. The idea is to let the ratings system function as before, but to limit the extreme abuse of a "minus" attack, where someone repeatedly rates down the postings of someone else. New accounts begin with no ratings points, so it is not possible to get around the limit by creating a new account.

We really don't have much abuse here, but I'd like to try this out anyway, and to see what people think of it. I don't know if we would actually propose to add it to the main BOINC code. We'll see after it's tested and discussed.

I've already used up my five points few hours ago to minus some of my old posts, now eagerly waiting for the renewal (to try out on others' posts ;-) How long do I have to wait (with locked hands)?

My question is - is it considered OK to be able to plus or minus one's own posts??

No, I don't think so. This is exactly why I wanted to test it out with a real crew.

Now you cannot rate your own posts, nor your own profile.

That is different from the standard forum package.

Neat feature. Once all rating points are expended the + and - buttons disappear.

That is the reason why I did ask. I never considered it OK. Additionally when I ask something in Q&A, I can tell "I have this question too", so suddenly there are already two such persons asking...

A good idea Cap'n. Seeing the ratings abuse being done on S@H a while back really bothered me.

Your setup would allow for much less abuse in my opinion.

We be pirates, so one point per watch.

How long does it exactly take to wait for 'one watch'? Is it a 'sand watch' going down, a 'small watch hand' going 'round once, or a 'thread watch' count?

After minusing 5 of my posts, it went down to zero. Next day it got back to two points, which I used to plus some -1 posts. Now it is again +2 and it stayed there for another two days. Looked like approx. +1 point in dozen pirate hours?

I went from this thread to my profile. When I clicked EDIT the server crashed. I blame myself.

A watch is normally considered to be 4 hours long. Hence the use of 1 to 8 bells to mark the time. Odd strikes mark the half hour and even strikes mark the hours. There were 6 watches per day with the mid-watch split into 2 two hour watches called 'dog' watches. Most of my time was spent on submersible craft and our watches were 6 hours and no clock (bells) bonging to mark time. Most of the time was on a 3 section rotation, meaning 6 hours watch and 12 hours not on watch, but available for work that needed to be done. I'm not sure what the targets were doing. This was probably a little more than you wanted to know.
