The Pirates@Home server has been upgraded to BOINC version 5.2.15. Lots of small things are not working right now, but are being corrected as they are found, or at least as we are able to figure them out.

The problem with images being lost has been fixed. However, there is still a problem with displaying or modifying profiles. This is likely due to database problems, and is being investigated... ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

The problem has been fixed, and now profiles display properly and can be modified. It was not a database problem, it was a project customization issue. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

I've noticed looking thru some of the workunits there are participants still using version 4.19, but they seem to crunch sucessfully. In many cases (not all) what you are seeing are WU that were sent out last summer just before closedown and now are being sent out for their second outing. I think you will find that more often than not the v4.19 results were returned last June not since reincarnation. Given that 4.19 was still allowed last JUne, and that the apps have not been developped since, it is no surprise that they still all work together. The only issues would be around the different ways EDF is handled, and so on, and at present there is not enough work here to test that properly... R~~

As of a few minutes ago I could NOT modify my profile text, this produces a cannot modify profile - database error message. I was able to change the picture.

Does it work, or not, if the text you are entering has no single quotes in it, or not? Or other special characters? ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Pardon me for jumping in on someone else's thread here, but just wanted to let you know that I was able to just create and edit a profile. I tried editing again and adding single quotes on a word, which then caused it to report a "database error". ____________ I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies

It worked once I removed all the single quotes or double quotes. ( I've or don't ) It should be noted that I've not had a "problem" with this on the other 15 or so projects (same profile cut-n-pasted)

Noted for the log. I had the same problem/solution. I have not yet been able to run the script which translates forum posts and profiles to BBcode. That may fix it. Or not, but we'll add this to the list. Thanks for the report, from all hands. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

I remember there was this problem in one of the projects. It was either PrimeGrid (Message@home then) or Sztaki Desktop Grid... Probably the latter.

I had also some issues on updating forum preferences. Namely changing my avatar.

This is usually a caching problem. Caching by your own browser, that is.

BTW: I dodn't really know where to post this message. Could you specify, where should we post about problems with forums (as testing it is our current goal, it doesn't really fit into 'Help! or Helpdesk, as it invloves no crunching it doesn't fit into 'Number Crunching') Both Help! and Helpdesk are for help of all sorts, not just crunching. That is why they are there, in addition to 'Number Crunching'. This kind of thing would go to Help!. Other discussions could go on the Wish list. I am wondering if the Helpdesk format is worthwhile? Einstein@Home dropped it. The idea of creating a knowledge base/FAQ is good, but does it work? What is working best on other projects? ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

I am wondering if the Helpdesk format is worthwhile? Einstein@Home dropped it. The idea of creating a knowledge base/FAQ is good, but does it work? What is working best on other projects? As long as you want to keep your rants off of the main forums, the helpdesk forums aren't a bad thing. The main problem is that people don't look for help on the front page of the project. If their Boinc Manager so much as beeps at them, they are posting about it on the forums. No checking of the news, no checking of a possibility of a FAQ. Partially because the Boinc Manager has buttons pointing to the forums, not going through the front page. Partially because they think this is easier. Although there are of course those who refuse to be helped by other volunteers and only want to talk to the top brass, thus demand they get their email addresses. The help desk forums at Seti help relieve the main forums. Plus you need credits to be able to post at their main forums. So if Seti were to dump the help desk forums.... people wouldn't be able to post for help. But that aside. All the FAQs in the world won't help you if people refuse to look for them. Not even if you added them as a download or installed with BOINC. How many readme files are sent with games and you still see people going to forums, especially signing up to them even, to ask a question that's handled in the readme.txt? That's my 2 cents. ;) ____________ Jord. The BOINC FAQ Service.

I think the help desk would work better if links to its pages were on the message boards page. Kind of like Einstein, where all the links come off the same page, but also kind of like SETI in that it is a very good idea to have the SETI-style 'I also have this question' buttons and so on on the helpdesk. SETI-style pages, Einstein style links. R~~ ____________
