So based on Lee's suggestions in another thread I have altered the looks of the front page news box a small bit. I removed the RSS validation icon/link and replaced it with a more standard RSS icon and link to the feed, and I shortened the "more info..." link.

I've also created a separate page which just generates the front page news box. You can access it at http://pirates.spy-hill.net/news_frontpage.php. But since this does not change much, if I run it from the command line it generates a static HTML page with the same content at http://pirates.spy-hill.net/user_profile/news_frontpage.html which can be included in the assembly of the front page, if it exists, saving us a little bit of work each time the front page is displayed.

But wait, there is more. It's also an iGoogle gadget. Just add it to your iGoogle page via URL with the extra argument ?ig=1. That is, add the gadget http://pirates.spy-hill.net/news_frontpage.php?ig=1 and you'll get that same front page news box in a gadget.

I think iGoogle does a better job with RSS news than this box, so it's only an example of how to do this, but hopefully useful nontheless.
