testing signature. Wormholio is adding new code to the signature box. Add as long a graphical signature if you want to test along. :)

Checking if my sig now shows...

If you have a short sig then you get no scroll bars, right?

Well, let's see if this sig is short enough.

No scrolly bars. :)
And they are there with a large sig picture.

On Linux with Firefox 1.0.8 it has the scroll bar next to each signature, regardless of how large it is.

But Firefox 1.5.0.20 on Linux seems to just truncate. Strange.

The whole thread's page seem to be displayed cleanly and correctly on IE7. With Netscape/7.2 Ageless Steel's signature fields are some 7 text lines high and contain scrollbar at the right side. Only the topmost pixel line from large signature can be seen without scrolling.

I see a normal sig with no scroll bars, IE7.

I made mine nice and tall to see what happens.

edit: Even with both stats blocks in the long format I don't see scroll bars for my sig.

With IE7, everything's OK. With NS7 (a.k.a. old Mozilla), the scrolled signature field is the same high as Jord's ones. Your sig. is by approx. 1/3 taller and it is also necessary to scroll by nearly 4 "pages", Jord's sig. is 3 "pages" tall.

After zooming the text in, until 120% nothing changed, from 150% already Rusty (a small one), Wormy and me (both larger, but a bit smaller than Jord and John) have their sigs with scrollbar, but everything's visible without need to scroll.

With 200% Wormy's sig already need to be scrolled a bit and his and my (scrolled) sig area is equally long as Jord's and John's. With some 400% Rusty's scroll area is already the same long and need to be scrolled too.

Is there any graphical limit (in vertical pixel count) for (unscrolled) sig area, which is taken into account by the Mozilla family?

Firefox 2.0.0.2 has scroll bars for the sigs that have more than a single line.
Opera 9.02 also has scroll bars, but only for some of the longer sigs.

Maybe so on Windows, but not on Mac. Only the long ones are getting scroll bars.

What I have done is change one parameter in the style sheet. I changed the "overflow" parameter for the 'sigblock' class from "hidden" to "auto". The hidden setting simply truncated everything that would stick out below the allocated height. (And most of the crew then trimmed their sigs accordingly).

According to Eric Meyer's book on CSS, for the "auto" setting it is up to the browser to decide when it should or should not show scroll bars. And I suspect that newer browsers are better at doing the 'right' thing, though as we can see there is a lot of variation.

Firefox 2.0.0.2 on Windows XP Pro.

No scrolls bars at all.

John's is cut off after Predictor and I can only see the text part of Jord's.

Opera 9.02 and 9.10 both show scroll bars.

And so does Netscape 8.1.2.

And so does Firefox 1.5.0.10 (different computer than the other tests, but still XP Pro)

Because all that information about you (under your avatar) was possibly more (vertical place) worth (= took more place into account) than all what you told us in that post :-)

I got a long list. :-)

But here I'll stay as Stainless Cutlass for now. It's more appropriate to the surroundings. :)

Peter, you're right about the height of the message box being related to the amount of stuff under the avatar.

However an even more interesting thing happened with that little experiment. Where I didn't have the scroll bars before on FF 2.0.0.2, I now have them.

::goes to turn avatars back on::

[edit]Well the scroll bars are still there after turning avatars back on. It makes my head hurt to wonder why it wasn't working before, so I'll leave that headache to our fearless leader[/edit]

The setting we are testing is the 'overflow' in CSS for the signature block. It can be set to 'hidden', which always truncates, or 'auto', which lets the browser decide how to best handle the overflow (eg. create a scrollbar).

We had been using 'hidden' for a long while, after a discussion about excessive sig length on BOINC projects. The crew responded with short sigs, sometimes wider, and some animated blocks that show each project in turn. All improvments, in my view at least.

Last week I turned on 'auto' to try it out, though I turned it off again yesterday for a bit. I'm now turning it back on. I've also set it to 'auto' for the body of the post and set the max width to 100%. That could/should result in a horizontal scroll bar for text that would stick out to the right.

I'd like to collect data on how different browsers deal with these settings. The reports can come in here, but the final results could be tabulated on a wiki page.

We already have some data above, but for the 'auto' setting there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to display the text, even though you may find one or the other more pleasing or annoying. What we need is a description of exactly how the browser renders the block. Is it simply truncated as it was with the 'hidden' setting? Is there always a scroll bar, or does it only appear if the block of text is too tall or wide? Anything else different which should be noted?

Well, For me I don't see any change for anyone's sigs, They are either all as I would see elsewhere (Including myself's), Or none at all really. I haven't seen any scroll bar at all. I also tried with just IE 6 but it was the same result.
