As a part of our testing of modifications to the discussion forums, some of the forums have been closed to outsiders. You must be a member of the crew not only to post, but just to read those discussions.

Ditto here. Logged out, I was asked to log in to read the "Pirate Crew Issues". Logged in, no problems. [color=navy][size=12][b]Those who can, do.

I logged out and tested. Aye, that is as it should be. The next question is, can some scurvy dog get in to read those discussion rooms without logging in? I've block the two access methods I could think of, but I don't know for sure that it's all closed up. It works better than a webmail for which I pay 10€/yr, because here when you log out, you can't use browser's 'Go back' button to see anything you were looking at, when logged in. Maybe we should start charging? 1€/yr? Or how many cobblestones is it worth to ye? :-) ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Maybe we should start charging? 1€/yr? Or how many cobblestones is it worth to ye? :-) Nice, that euro sign does show up in an answer box, but in the forums it's completely garbage. (test with alt + 0128 €) As for hacking things. I can use the "Message board posts" search under your nickname to still look in the "closed" forums. Using IE where I am not logged in, I click on your name, go see all the posts you made. It still allows me to learn enough from what I am not allowed to see. ____________ Jord. As for hacking things. I can use the "Message board posts" search under your nickname to still look in the "closed" forums. Using IE where I am not logged in, I click on your name, go see all the posts you made. It still allows me to learn enough from what I am not allowed to see. It gets worse. When searching for something using the Search box, you use the standard Google search now built in in Boinc server. What's one of the options in Google? Look through Cache. So I can now see whole threads, cached, through the search. Unless you don't mind them to read it that way. No way to post and answer, though. ____________ Jord. The BOINC FAQ Service.

Nice, that euro sign does show up in an answer box, but in the forums it's completely garbage. (test with alt + 0128 €) Yes, I hope we can fix that. I just copied it from the quoted text. As for hacking things. I can use the "Message board posts" search under your nickname to still look in the "closed" forums.... Okay, I'll have to look at fixing that window in as well. It's clearly useful to have pirates available for trying to break into something. :-) ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

But this should only show posts that were exposed when google crawled the site, before the rooms were closed. Now the googlebot should not be able to get in to index the closed discussions. It will take a few days or so to see if that is in deed the case. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Tip: Is it only a googlebot crawling around here, or other crawlers and spiders as well?

Tip: Is it only a googlebot crawling around here, or other crawlers and spiders as well? No doubt there are many. They have already seen what is there before today, but won't be able to get at the new content in the Pirates only parts. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Google also crawls around other search engines that don't obey the voluntary spidering rules of the vast Internet seas. On a landlubber museum site I maintain, I blocked google and other search engines from some directories only to find weeks later that some creepycrawlies got in and Google had the information up from what was a password protected members only section which could be accessed freely by their cache option. What's annoying is that things I want them to index they don't :P

As for hacking things. I can use the "Message board posts" search under your nickname to still look in the "closed" forums. Now you cannot. You can see the number of all posts, but when you click on it you will only see the "public" posts. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Ah yes. But the whole of the Google search is now returning nothing. So you can just as well dump the "new" search option and only go for the "keyword search" one.

I was working on the search code this morning, so it may have been broken for a bit, but now it should be working. A google search will find the things it has already indexed, and for those items you can see the first line or two of the page, and you can view the cached version. But if you try to view the actual thread and you are not logged in you will be challenged to authenticate. Keyword search of body or title while not logged in only displays results from the public forums. When you authenticate you'll see all content, public and private. I expect Google won't add new content from the private forums, unless the googlebot gets its own account, in which case we'll make it crank some workunits. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

What's annoying is that things I want them to index they don't :P I'm not using robots.txt to block indexing, since as you point out some robots don't honor it. I'm blocking access to the forum threads, based on the category. If your connection is not authenticated you cannot access threads in the Pirate Crew Issues category. That applies to a person or a bot. The clever guys at Google will probably teach their bots to get an account. We shall see. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Aye Cap'n. You'd probably be given more gold that you'd know what to do with and offered a landlubber job for life by Google if you could get their spider to crunch WU's as part of the crew here... ____________

If I tricked the googlebot into crunching instead of indexing then it might be Microsoft, not Google, that would give me some treasure. ;-) ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats
