If I click on any of the buttons that are supposed to open browser windows I get a message like:

"BOINC Manager tried to display the Web page http://www.whatever but couldn't find a Web browser. To fix this set the environment variable BROWSER to the path of your Web browser, then restart the BOINC Manager."

My BROWSER environment variable is set correctly:

peter@linux:~> echo $BROWSER
/usr/local/bin/firefox
peter@linux:~> which firefox
/usr/local/bin/firefox

Any clues?

Cheers

Peter, I have no idea if this is helpful or not. I start the manager from a shell. This is what it printed out when I hit the button to come to the Pirates front page. And I did get here in Firefox. Those Gdk warnings are normal. They print out every time I start the manager.

[Kathryn@Galaxy ~]$ boincmgr

Strangely enough, nothing comes up with `echo $BROWSER`

[Kathryn@Galaxy ~]$ echo $BROWSER

Sorry, all I seem to be able to say is "Works for me".

Odd. The only output I get from a command line (apart from the GTK stuff is:

<pre>
connect: Operation now in progress
20:13:48: Error: No default application can open .html extension
</pre>

Your output looks as though as script is being run, which would make sense. It's as though the program shells out and then runs a script (although it's not a bash script because 'exists' isn't a bash command AFAIK). Are you running Linux, or Mac OS/X?

Hmm. Oh well! Looks like it's going to turn out to be one of life's little mysteries.

But time for me to turn in, now, or the wife'll be looking daggers at me. Thanks for your help, Kathryn. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to help you on the Wiki.

Cheers

Try setting X11BROWSERS to the path to firefox rather than just BROWSERS.
I don't know if it will work, but Kathryn's listing suggests it's worth a try.

I tried this last night:

% export X11BROWSERS=/usr/local/bin/firefox
% boincmgr

No luck.

X11BROWSERS appears to be a list of browsers produced by testing for the existence of various executables. I think it's a variable that gets its contents from whatever script runs in Fedora. I can't find any likely candidates for this script in my SUSE setup.

Cheers
