I am suddenly getting a message of "could not open socket" when trying the turk. I can enter the text items and the initial page loads with no problem, but after entering the error message appears.

If it happens again, we can try some tests. Another potential problem with the turk. When using IE 8, you don't get credit for your work. The counter doesn't appear in the lower right corner, and the number of turks doesn't increase of the account page. There is no indication that there was a problem submitting the turk, just no credit.

There is no indication that there was a problem submitting the turk, just no credit. The counters on the lower right only appear if you have at least one correct task in this session. If you cannot get even one to count, then these counters will never show up. Can you check if there is a difference between pressing the "Sumbit" button (with the mouse) and pressing the Enter/Return key on the keyboard. Also, there is a difference in behaviour with JavaScript on or off, so maybe you or someone could try it both ways and report the results? And finally, perhaps you could also try the reference implementation here, at the reCaptcha site and see how that works (or doesn't) with IE8. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Scott Brown wrote: Interestingly, if you first do a turk by clicking the submit button which will give both the correct/incorrect message as well as the stats in the bottom right corner, and then do the turk by just hitting enter, the correct/incorrect message no longer appears, but the correct stats from the previous page (where one clicked the submit button) remains unchanged and present. Just because a slight implementation detail was changed yesterday, see Message 7973 and few other messages around. Still, for some reason the dialog's behavior is broken on IE, on all BOINC projects sites, which do use it for human checking. However, it works correctly on reCaptcha's site. Possibly not the same code is shared? ____________ Peter .-)

The 'could not open socket' message is back. I can enter turks, but the counter doesn't record new entries.

I wasn't able to try it when you made your observation, but I did try it just now and it didn't seem any stricter. Still, it's valuable to note such things, in case a pattern develops. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats
