I am suddenly getting a message of "could not open socket" when trying the turk. I can enter the text items and the initial page loads with no problem, but after entering the error message appears.

Edit:
Okay, retried several times with the error, but now it is working again. Interesting glitch???

Thanks for noting it. I can only guess that the server at CMU was down. If it happens again, we can try some tests.

Trying to catch up to Searcher, eh?

Another potential problem with the turk. When using IE 8, you don't get credit for your work. The counter doesn't appear in the lower right corner, and the number of turks doesn't increase of the account page. There is no indication that there was a problem submitting the turk, just no credit.

The counters on the lower right only appear if you have at least one correct task in this session. If you cannot get even one to count, then these counters will never show up.

Can you check if there is a difference between pressing the "Sumbit" button (with the mouse) and pressing the Enter/Return key on the keyboard.

Also, there is a difference in behaviour with JavaScript on or off, so maybe you or someone could try it both ways and report the results?

And finally, perhaps you could also try the reference implementation here, at the reCaptcha site and see how that works (or doesn't) with IE8.

This is the same problem that was noted with IE7. Entering the turk and clicking the submit button will work with credit recorded correctly. Entering the text and simply hitting enter will not record properly and will give no correct/incorrect message nor will it report the total correct and by session in the bottom right corner.

Interestingly, if you first do a turk by clicking the submit button which will give both the correct/incorrect message as well as the stats in the bottom right corner, and then do the turk by just hitting enter, the correct/incorrect message no longer appears, but the correct stats from the previous page (where one clicked the submit button) remains unchanged and present.

Mozilla Firefox does not have this behavior oddity (I have verified this on multiple machines using both browsers).

Just because a slight implementation detail was changed yesterday, see Message 7973 and few other messages around.

Still, for some reason the dialog's behavior is broken on IE, on all BOINC projects sites, which do use it for human checking. However, it works correctly on reCaptcha's site. Possibly not the same code is shared?

The 'could not open socket' message is back. I can enter turks, but the counter doesn't record new entries.

Edit:
Interesting...just noticed that this is almost the same time of day that I reported the problem a few days ago.

Edit 2:
And now it is back...same behavior of a brief (2-5 minute) problem.

A different issue with the Turk. The last few times I have tried it, my error rate has been 50% or more. Since I hadn't really had any grog (nor was there any other reason to suggest excessive human error...e.g., not late at night or overly tired, not typing too fast, etc.), it seems that something may have changed in the way the Turk accepts entries. Anyone else seeing this?

I can't see anything (except / because of too much grog) X-(

I wasn't able to try it when you made your observation, but I did try it just now and it didn't seem any stricter. Still, it's valuable to note such things, in case a pattern develops.
