Message 3690 - Posted: 30 Aug 2006 | 11:28:38 UTC

Yesterday I was notified about not being able to deliver Pirate e-mails to me: "E-mail to you ... is bounced back saying "550 Access denied". I've checked all possible logs together with the admin but found nothing suspicious.

Afterwards I tried to modify my e-mail address (same domain, different name), the website logic is stuck in the verifying process, but the notification e-mail is still not comming.

For the ease of checking the logs, what is the mail server IP address I should check for?

I've tried yet another email account (different provider), it worked flawlessly in few seconds. I know now the sequence of SMTP servers (rather lengthy :)

Trying again the "wrong" server...

As you may have noticed, the messages come from apache@spy-hill.net. I'd like to change that, but have not found how to do so yet.
It may be that some anti-spam software things something from "apache@" is spam. But I would expect something other than 550.

Unrelated to this, it looks like I need to clean up the help desk display, eh?

Good idea :-)

But this should be no problem, I hope at least. I'd like to ask you emailing me one such failed sequence from the logs, we have no idea whad could happen. My current email address is "a good one".
[edit] I mean especialy from related SMTP logs, not web server (I assume the number 550 comes ftom there). [/edit]

I'd like to change that, but have not found how to do so yet.

It's probably somehow up th the sender code to modify at least the description from "Apache " to maybe "Pirates account manager " or so... I'm not the wise there :-(
I suppose it is handled in PHP & Co. by the web server. Is it your own code, or tuned Boinc code?

First fruits of investigation... it looks like we (our company) have in the meantime got approx. 600 various drug etc. spams from ms-smtp-**.nyroc.rr.com [24.24.2.**] and the e-mails from spy-hill.net are traversing just through this set of SMTP servers just before contacting the ours. So our admin simply blocked rr.com and rr.net.

Now there is something unblocked at our side, but I don't know exactly what. But I finally receive e-mails from apache@spy-hill.net!

alvarez.localdomain (localhost [127.0.0.1])
alvarez.localdomain (alvarez.localdomain [192.168.1.12])
moonflower.localdomain (cpe-204-210-158-6.hvc.res.rr.com [204.210.158.6])
ms-smtp-0*.nyroc.rr.com (ms-smtp-01.nyroc.rr.com [24.24.2.5*])

BTW, is it possible to specify relative font size with the BBCode tags (like size=-3 or +3)? The [ size=nn ] code specifies fixed size and do not reflect browser's font size.

E-mail to users is handled in several places in the BOINC PHP code, and the return address is supposed to be configurable. For subscriptions it turns out the code does not use the configured return address.

I've subscribed to this thread and will see if my changes fix the problem. If so, I'll submit this to Berkeley.

Except that you don't get a subscription notice for your own post, so you have to wait until someone else (like your dog) posts to the thread.

The "rr" stands for RoadRunner, a high-speed internet service associated with Time-Warner cable. They serve about 26 states in the US, so blocking these will also block a lot of legitimate e-mail.

Yes, this was clear to me (I've found a lot of high-level domains in the list of filtered domains) and subsequently after my intervention all filters were suppressed, to be made otherwise (and more wise).

BTW, I've got 3 notifications from "Pirates@Home" , so this is fine, I'll later check the e-mail address change, whether the sender will be called "Apache" or "Pirates@Home" . They were dated 14:04, 14:15 and 14:50 my local time, which corresponds good with the posting times.

BTW1, since when is the time shown in UTC? I remember the times being shown in PST or something else near you (I think it was EDT)?

BTW2, I remember that Capt'n Wormy told us that after opening an already read thread (and/or after posting there?), the browser intentionally jumps at the most recent message. Is it intentionally different in the helpdesk, to see the problem question first, although I've already read it and there is no new message for me?

It should be UTC, but perhaps this is recent, as I did some work on the server configuration which may have changed this.

I also just noticed that this did not work in this helpdesk thread, so I will investigate.

I'll later check the e-mail address change, whether the sender will be called "Apache" or "Pirates@Home" .

email change confirmation behaves still the same, gone from Apache:

Thanks for testing this as well. I just fixed it here (I think - could you please test) and verified the problem is also in the latest version of BOINC (which we don't quite have). If we get these all fixed I'll submit a bug report with the fixes.

Yes, now it looks fine (except the Return-Path, but.... that's mostly not visible anyway):

According the relative font sizes - is something like this principially possible?

Great. It's actually fine to have the "real" sender in the headers, but it's nicer to have the customizable From: line.

Thanks for testing this.

The BBCode tag transformations built into BOINC let you specify the font size in pixels. I agree that it might be useful to use [size=+2]relative[/size] sizing, as in HTML. So I've just changed the BBCode to do that. If you put + or - in the [size] tag then the size change will be relative. If no + or - then the size is in pixels ([size=-2]which I don't like as much[/size]).

Let's give it a try:

[size=-7]m[/size][size=-6]m[/size][size=-5]m[/size][size=-4]m[/size][size=-3]m[/size][size=-2]m[/size][size=-1]m[/size]m[size=+1]m[/size][size=+2]m[/size][size=+3]m[/size][size=+4]m[/size][size=+5]m[/size][size=+6]m[/size][size=+7]m[/size]

There seem to be effectively 7 relative sizes (-2 ... +4) working out of allowed 15 (-7 ... +7), am I right?

I think it is more straightforward to resize some (more or less important) text this way, without trying 100 times and thinking of possible screen font sizes...

Yes. That is what HTML allows, so that is what I put in the BBCode -> HTML translation

I agree completely. In general, on the web, you don't know the absolute size of anything, so it's better to specify relative sizes or postitions. That goes for fonts, and it goes for tables and other page features and almost everything else.

Yes. That is what HTML allows, so that is what I put in the BBCode -> HTML translation. [...] In general, on the web, you don't know the absolute size of anything, so it's better to specify relative sizes or postitions.

So, the last step would be to describe it on the BBCode tags description page. Somehow simply, because the exact description seen in the man files is only for geeks:
[size=+1]
[b][[/b][b]size=[/b][color=gray][[/color][b]+[/b][color=gray]|[/color][b]-[/b][color=gray][b][/b]][/color][b]5][/b][color=gray][u]Big text[/u][/color][b][[/b][b]/size[/b][b]][/b] to [size=+3][b]Big text[/b][/size]
[/size]
Maybe one simple example out of the possibilities:

[size=+2]Bigger text[/size] ... to [size=+2]Bigger text[/size]

And who knows for sure, will use the absolute sizes too.
