Pirates@Home is back for a new mission, at least for a short while.

LIGO is participating in a project called Interactions in Understanding the Universe (I2U2), which will allow high school teachers and their students to access LIGO environmental data (from channels such as seismometers, tiltmeters, magnetometers and weather stations) and to use these data for inquiry-based investigations called "e-Labs". This is to be done in collaboration with other labs and experimental collaborations which use Grid computing, with the goal of making Grid tools and resources available for education and outreach in addition to their use for research. Right now the project is only in the planning and prototype stages. You can find a little bit more detail here.

One feature we would like to try out for I2U2 is a collection of on-line discussion and meeting rooms, similar to the discussion forums on BOINC based projects. In fact, it may be easiest to just borrow the code from BOINC and add the additional features we need for I2U2. So Pirates@Home is back, to test the current forum code and new additions that might be useful for I2U2.

While this does not involve letting out new work, we may let some workunits out as a part of getting the test suite of programs back up to spec. Don't complain if there is no work, but don't be surprised if you get a different screensaver from time to time.

Welcome aboard, mates, as the Pirates sail again.

Good to be back. I see we can teach Eric a thing or two about BBCode while we're waiting for work. :)

Having said that... my first unit ran in 2 minutes. I didn't have time enough to see the new graphics. 3 spinning globes was all I saw before it went off. ;)

Indeed, I'll have to get used to the BBCode. There is a script which should have converted the forums from HTML to BBCOde, but it failed when I ran it, and so it's on my list of things to take a look at. Don't be surprised if the old stuff changes suddenly some day.

Maybe a script to filter BBCode from the forum_forum.php list too?

As it isn't interpreted there, it messes up the lists if an entry has BBCode in the first few bytes.

Sorry I'm late Cap'n.

Have you looked at what Janus is doing over at the BURP site? He has been working on a major rewrite of the forum code for a while now. It would probably be a good idea to get together with him.

I have not seen the site yet, but I did know he was doing the re-write, and I do plan to work with him on testing it all out. The immediate plan here is first to go to BOINC 5.3, but then if Janus is willing we may test out his handiwork here. Details yet to be worked out. Thanks for mentioning it.
