Capt'n, my Message 4164 in Pirate Applications : cube 5.05 thread is displayed with broken formatting. When I try to reply to this message, even the preview is not possible. When I copy the original contents into the reply (or try to edit the problem message), the preview is broken the same way.

When posting, the preview and message were OK, I swear as a pirate!

I started a new instance of IE - the same. Then tried good ol' Netscape 7.2 - it's nearly OK, no overlapping (nearly!), but the vertically moved quote boxes can be seen too. Large gap between "Xxxx wrote:" and missing (at least little) gap between the box and a reply.
No, at some browser font sizes they overlap in Netscape too.

Was it okay on IE7 before that?

Yesterday I adjusted the spacing below the quote boxes in the style sheet, so that it would look right (or at least readable) with or without a blank line after the [/ quote]. It looked okay to me on Firefox.

As long as it's valid CSS, and designed to look like what the standards say it should look, it should be OK on all browsers. If it's not, it's browser's fault, not yours.

EDIT: oh my gawd, look at this mess. Happened both in preview and in actual post.

Well, thanks to the validator I found some errors in the CSS, including some stray text at the head of the file. Different browsers will react to errors in different ways, but now it should be valid CSS. How do quotes look now on IE7?

Capt'n, seems like you've got it! The whole forum (especially the main page) and messages looks somehow cleen and tidy to me (did I miss a tidy-up round?) and the nested comments are again rendered correctly on my IE7.

The easiest thing to do is to convert to HTML. There is already a function for that.

But the right thing to do is to convert to plain text. In this context, it's just the text which begins the posting. Plain text is fine, and the links or other formatting will be there when the thread is read.

Another way, probably not efficient, but easy, is converting to HTML and striping HTML tags afterwards

There is already a vestigial strip_tags() to remove HTML from the excerpt. Converting BB code to HTML just before that strips out both.
