Capt'n, my Message 4164 in Pirate Applications : cube 5.05 thread is displayed with broken formatting. When I try to reply to this message, even the preview is not possible. When I copy the original contents into the reply (or try to edit the problem message), the preview is broken the same way.

The new IE7, see the result. I noticed, during last few hours, something has changed... for instance, between the outer quote box and reply, I think there was automatically some vertical space insterted. Now, as you can see in my screenshot, they overlap. And the spacing between "Someone wrote:" and the box is overly large. As if the quoting box was moved some 5-10 pixels downwards. ____________ Peter .-)

I started a new instance of IE - the same. Then tried good ol' Netscape 7.2 - it's nearly OK, no overlapping (nearly!), but the vertically moved quote boxes can be seen too. Large gap between "Xxxx wrote:" and missing (at least little) gap between the box and a reply.

Yesterday I adjusted the spacing below the quote boxes in the style sheet, so that it would look right (or at least readable) with or without a blank line after the [/quote]. It looked okay to me on Firefox.

It looked okay to me on Firefox. As long as it's valid CSS, and designed to look like what the standards say it should look, it should be OK on all browsers. If it's not, it's browser's fault, not yours. EDIT: oh my gawd, look at this mess. Happened both in preview and in actual post. EDIT2: added a space to the [/ quote] Wormholio had typed and it kind of solved it...

Well, thanks to the validator I found some errors in the CSS, including some stray text at the head of the file. Different browsers will react to errors in different ways, but now it should be valid CSS. CSS, CSS, did you further check the HTML validity? ;-) It fails a bit. (But I do agree about the browsers.) EDIT: oh my gawd, look at this mess. Happened both in preview and in actual post. So now maybe you would believe me that indeed, as Marcellus said, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark". It definitely did not behave like that previously. BTW, where did you add the space top solve it? I'm not able to find out. ([edit]Later I've got it what you meant, the broken quote.[/edit])) (Anyway, am I (or, as Germans say, "der Otto Normalverbraucher") supposed to find any workarounds to solve such quirks in maybe two simple lines? ____________ Peter .-)

Forum is broken! forum_forum.php gets an empty page. I guess there are also some PHP errors but they aren't shown because error reporting is off (my guess).

Different browsers will react to errors in different ways, but now it should be valid CSS. How do quotes look now on IE7? See the attachment, I'd say the same, both in old Mozilla (just OK, as noted here, overlapping at most by 1 pixel) and IE7 (overlapping and stripped last line of many quotes - actually last line of each inner quote in multi-level quotes). And I still mean that the automatic few-pixel gaps above and below a quote should be vice-versa. ____________ Peter .-)

Capt'n, seems like you've got it! The whole forum (especially the main page) and messages looks somehow cleen and tidy to me (did I miss a tidy-up round?) and the nested comments are again rendered correctly on my IE7.

The whole forum (especially the main page) and messages looks somehow cleen and tidy to me (did I miss a tidy-up round?) and the nested comments are again rendered correctly on my IE7. I did some work on the CSS after your initial posting, and I ran it through the validator. I'm glad to hear it now works with IE7. And I finally broke down and installed IE7 on one of my machines, though I have not yet checked things in detail. I got my self confused at one point when sorting this thread by date. The question stayed at the top, and I thought there were no new posts. But of course this is the Q&A format, the question is always at the top. So I made a little tweak to change the background color of the question to show that. Maybe it helps, maybe not. Question list shows BBcode tags. It should either convert to HTML or remove them.

Maybe (at least links) to convert them to plain text with attached link in parenthesis?
ID: 4265 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
The easiest thing to do is to convert to HTML. There is already a function for that.

Wormholio wrote: The easiest thing to do is to convert to HTML. [...] But the right thing to do is to convert to plain text. And the easiest thing is converting [.*] to nothing. But then things like [...] would go away as well. Another way, probably not efficient, but easy, is converting to HTML and striping HTML tags afterwards; that would keep invalid BBcode tags, remove links etc, and still keep < and > symbols (the function to convert BBcode->HTML converts them to < >).

PovAddict wrote: Another way, probably not efficient, but easy, is converting to HTML and striping HTML tags afterwards This turns out to be the easiest to implement. There is already a vestigial strip_tags() to remove HTML from the excerpt. Converting BB code to HTML just before that strips out both. ____________ -- Eric Myers "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats

Wormholio wrote: There is already a vestigial strip_tags() to remove HTML from the excerpt. Converting BB code to HTML just before that strips out both. strip_tags is currently not used. I think it was used before to strip all HTML except some tags, before BBcode was used. It's a PHP builtin function. I think all we have now is a function to convert < to < etc. so HTML can't be inserted (shows as plain text). Afterwards the BBcode to HTML translation is done. We would then do strip_tags for the question list.

I think you misunderstand me. In the code I'm working on there was already a strip_tags(), probably left over from the days before BBcode. So converting from BBcode to HTML and then letting that strip_tags() remove the HTML does the trick. Exactly what I said, strip_tags call was left over from days before BBcode, now that we have BBcode, it's not being used. I know tags are not currently being stripped: <b>test</b>
