Yes, but we will first be testing a new feature, so I've closed it off for a bit to build up some demand. Everybody works on this crew, even the new guys.

Okay, account creation is now enabled. But there is a twist. In order to create an account you must supply a valid invitation code.

The invitation code for today is 'grog4us'.

Let me know if there are any problems with this new feature.

I tried creating a new account with the attach wizard (BOINC 5.2.15). It never gave me a chance to provide the invitation code and failed. I don't know if this is not allowed by the wizard or if the get_project_config.php needs to be adjusted to allow this.

Yes, that's as I expect, at least for now, but apparently needs a fix.

I didn't know how to add the invite code field so that the wizard would display it properly, so I just had the account creation RPC send back the same error code it sends when account creation is disabled. Did it display such an error code, or something more confusing?

I had only changed the response in create_account.php; I didn't know about get_project_config.php, and I see that there is a natural way there to at least turn off client account creation. So I have done so, and now the wizard should simply decline to create an account in the first place, not just after it has tried to do so. Please test it if you are so inclined.

Adding the invitation code to the wizard would likely require that the Berkeley folks muck with the wizard code itself, and I don't know if they would care to do so. Meanwhile, since this is intended to restrict membership to only those who have been given the code, it suffices to require that new accounts be created only via the web.

Thanks for the report.

When attaching to World Community Grid, after the URL is accepted one gets to the field where to fill in the 32 character authenticator key automatically. Maybe that you need to use this field or adapt it to something similar?

That sounds more like backward compatibility to a project that has not yet updated to using e-mail/password authentication. But it's an idea, and it shows that it is possible.

What I've done is what was easy to do at the level of a running project. If it's desirable to add an invitation code then I suspect Rom would have to monkey with the insides of the wizard. I've been preparing a note to David Anderson about this, but was waiting to see that it was all working well and I hadn't forgotten anything (which it seems I had).

Thanks.

I was hoping someone would ask. The new invitation code is 'blunderbuss'.

Please report any problems or anything strange in both account creation and in attaching to the project. (I tried to attach a new host yesterday and did not get asked for an e-mail/password, but just an account key.)

I tried it yesterday, and indeed with no invitation codes I was able to attach via e-mail/password. Something about how I've implemented the invitation codes is causing the CC on attach to not try to use e-mail/password.

Pirates@Home is still running, or maybe better to say running again. It had closed down entirely, but was reactivated. Check the Main Page and the various threads on the message boards to see what the current mission of the project is.

Just so you know, crunchable work is sporadic and very short, with credits very small. Don't rely on this project to keep your computer warm!

And welcome aboard. 8-)

If work is so sporadic & The Pirates@Home scheduler is currently shut down. No work is being assigned. Shouldn't the create account be disabled?? As new people will be disapponted & maybe not come back when you need them.

There's really no reason to turn them away. At least, that is, not until we do some further testing of the invitation code mechanism.

ps my other machine is a Mac, but seems pointless putting that machine on because of above

Do as you wish, but when we have work I hope to have work to test on Mac as well.

Not sure the status of WUs, but I s'pose we'll find out when they're out there...

And as to Macs, sorry but that's one area where I can't oblige, as I don't use Macs. I've got Windows, and I've got a Linux partition, but that's about it...
